International Telecommunication Union
The International Telecommunication Union is the specialised agency of the United Nations (UN) responsible for information and telecommunications technology. The ITU is based on the principle of cooperation between governments, academia and the private sector (194 member states, more than 1000 companies, universities and international and regional organisations).
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) facilitates the international interconnection of communications networks, develops relevant technical standards and works to improve access to digital technologies in underserved communities around the world. ITU is working to close the digital gap as more than 2 billion people in developing countries remain unconnected. It provides a platform for international negotiation, knowledge sharing, capacity building and collaboration with members and partners to expand access to technology globally. Offers technical assistance to developing countries. Seeks to extend the benefits of new telecommunications technologies to all people.
Czechia has long participated in the work of the ITU, currently as a member of the ITU Council. We have long been monitoring the area of financial and human resources, strategic and financial plan, activities related to Internet governance, or the issues of the International Telecommunication Regulations. We are also involved in the discussions around the World Summit on the Information Society and the implementation of its conclusions, currently in connection with the next progressive revision - after twenty years (the so-called WSIS+20). In the area of new standards for emerging digital technologies, Czechia promotes a responsible and human-centred approach. Czechia also provides funding through the ITU for cyber resilience in selected developing countries in Africa. In the context of the war in Ukraine, Czechia is contributing to pilot projects to rebuild Ukraine's telecommunications infrastructure.
