Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS

The UN Global Programme on HIV/AIDS was established as a joint United Nations programme in 1994. UNAIDS is based on several sponsoring organizations within the UN system.

The UN Global Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) focuses on promoting the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, supporting people living with HIV and reducing the vulnerability of selected individuals and communities to HIV infection. UNAIDS currently works in more than 80 countries.

As part of its mandate, UNAIDS addresses a wide range of cultural, health, social and economic issues related to HIV/AIDS. These topics also include gender equality and women's empowerment, and the dangers of HIV/AIDS in times of natural and humanitarian disasters. UNAIDS makes recommendations for working with at-risk groups that may contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS, such as foreign peacekeepers, homosexuals, substance users, young people and orphans. Combating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS is also a key issue.

The work of UNAIDS is funded by contributions from sponsoring organisations (through national governments) as well as voluntary contributions from foundations, private companies, philanthropic organisations and groups (including universities, sports clubs and others).
