Czechs living abroad now have the opportunity to participate in elections more easily. This autumn, in the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, they will be able to vote by postal voting for the first time. During a weekend webinar with the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior, Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský confirmed the introduction of the new option, which will greatly simplify the participation of Czechs living abroad in the electoral process. The webinar was attended by Czechs living abroad from 35 countries worldwide.
The new key feature is that from the end of April 2025, Czechs living abroad will be able to easily open an account on the Citizen Portal without the need to have a Czech bank account or a Czech mobile phone number. Thanks to the digital identity, Czechs living abroad can quickly and easily apply online for the registration on the special voters' list and for the necessary documents for postal voting. In this way, they will not need to verify their signatures in person at offices or embassies. This efficient and modern upgrade enables greater accessibility of the electoral process.
During his speech, Minister Lipavský stressed that postal voting is a secure, verified and modern method that is successfully used in many European countries. The entire procedure, from registration in the special voters' list to the actual sending of the ballots, was explained and described in detail by the representatives of the ministries.
According to Minister Lipavský, the simplified access to the Citizen Portal confirms the commitment of Czech institutions and the current political representation to enable all citizens to actively participate in democratic decision-making, wherever they live.
