Disaster Risk Reduction

Disasters, both natural and anthropogenic, have been increasing in recent decades, with climate change being one of the contributing factors to the increased frequency of natural disasters. The United Nations is addressing these challenges through the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), which focuses on resilience building and disaster prevention. UNDRR coordinates the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which aims to reduce the impact of disasters and increase national preparedness. Czechia is actively participating in these global initiatives and is also addressing specific challenges such as drought and floods at the national level.

Within the United Nations, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) works to strengthen disaster resilience and cooperation in addressing the impacts of disasters. UNDRR is an umbrella for global, regional and national organizations working to reduce hazards and deal more effectively with the consequences. It also coordinates the implementation of the so-called Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (the Sendai Framework). The Sendai Framework, endorsed at the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in March 2015, contains seven core objectives for disaster prevention, resilience and preparedness.

As far as the Czech position is concerned, disaster risk reduction and resilience-building in the context of recovery in affected areas was one of the main priorities of the country's humanitarian efforts during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2022 and remains a priority in the long term.

Czechia has also been directly involved in the negotiation of the Sendai Framework, financially supporting humanitarian actions in target countries and monitoring the situation on its own territory. These steps have led to the development of updated documents dealing primarily with drought and floods. These include, for example, the Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Czech Republic, or the Concept of Drought Protection for the Czech Republic for the period 2023-2027

Czechia is also a member of the UNDRR Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia. Conferences of this group are held annually with the participation of Czech representatives.
