REGISTERING A CHILD’S BIRTH (0-17)
THE CHILD WAS NOT BORN WHILE THE PARENTS WERE MARRIED AND THE MOTHER IS NOT A CZECH/EU/SWISS/LIECHTENSTEIN/NORWEGIAN CITIZEN; AND SHE DOES NOT HAVE PERMANENT RESIDENCE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC.
Who can submit the application?
- The parents of an underage child. Both parents stated in the child’s foreign birth certificate will come to the appointment. Children 15 and older have to attend the appointment with their parents. Children do not need to attend the appointment if their signatures on the respective forms are legalised.
- Child’s family members that are involved with registering a child’s birth (e.g. grandparents, siblings or authorised representatives of the child).
Please consider: if the application is submitted by grandparents or other family members, it is necessary to provide all given forms with the parents’ and the child’s (older than 15) legalised signatures (more info here).
That includes mainly the declaration of citizenship and the choice of the name and surname of the child.
Which documents do I need for submitting the application?
- The British Birth Certificate of the child*
*British documents must bear an apostille and must be translated into Czech by a sworn/court-appointed translator. You can see the list of translators who provided us with their contact information on our website – click here.
If you are submitting a document issued outside of UK, check the verification and translation requirements for the specific country.
- Proof of fatherhood, either by:
- Parents’ proclamation + a proof of a genetic test (in the form of expertise according to the law about experts and interpreters)
or - Application for Czech citizenship addressed to the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic (according to the § 28 of Law governing Czech Citizenship). The application must be submitted in up to one year from the day of the parents’ proclamation of fatherhood. If the fatherhood was proven before the child’s birth, the application must be submitted in up to one year from the child’s date of birth.
- Valid IDs of the parents (ID card, passport or a driving license)
- Father’s Proof of Czech Citizenship (regarding Czech citizens only – e.g. valid Czech ID card/Czech passport/Certificate of Czech Citizenship)
- Father’s Czech birth certificate
- Proof of the father’s marital status at the time of the child’s birth (e.g. divorce/death/widow-widower certificate)
- Foreign passports (e.g. UK passport) – if the child or parents have acquired another citizenship
- Proof of acquiring foreign citizenship (e.g. by naturalisation) – only if the child or father have acquired another citizenship
Regarding:

Citizenship of other country: If you are submitting a document issued in another country, check the verification and translation requirements for the specific country.
Other documents needed for verification of registry information, if it is not possible to prove with the aforementioned documents – such as legally effective decision about surname changes, etc.
