Applying for a Certificate of Czech Citizenship is your first step if you wish to apply for your first Czech passport, if you already have an expired one, or if one of your ancestors was a Czech citizen, and you wish to obtain Czech citizenship and subsequently request a passport.
Representatives of social services representing interests of a minor child, please proceed to the chapter for social services only.
for applicants aged 0-14, the following documents are required:
- printed and completed forms:
- Czech birth certificate of the child (not a British birth certificate translated into Czech)
- a valid passport or national ID card of the parent - if available, a previous Czech passport or previous Certificate of Czech Citizenship of the child
- if applicable, a document proving the acquisition of foreign citizenship (e.g., a British naturalization certificate) with a higher verification (apostille or super-legalization) and its official translation into Czech
Please note that at least one parent (or a guardian or other legal representative authorized by a court decision authenticated with an apostille and official translation into Czech) must be present at the application.
The child's presence is not required at this stage.
for applicants aged 15 and older, the following documents are required:
- printed and completed forms:
- Czech birth certificate, Czech marriage certificate – if you do not have this document, you can request a duplicate during the meeting
- presence of two witnesses with their valid identification documents (valid passport or national ID card, or its digital copy in the eDoklady application) who will confirm applicant´s identity
- 2 passport-sized photographs
- if available, previous passport, national ID card, previous Certificate of Czech Citizenship, driver’s license, etc.
- if applicable, a document proving acquisition of foreign citizenship (e.g., a British naturalization certificate) with a higher verification (apostille or super-legalization) and its official translation into Czech
Please note that falsely confirming someone else’s identity as a witness may lead to criminal prosecution.
If you are applying for a Certificate of Czech Citizenship based on the Czech citizenship of one of your ancestors (e.g., a parent or grandparent), we recommend that, before scheduling the appointment, you gather their Czech public records (birth certificates, marriage certificates, travel documents, etc.) along with their British documents, especially passports and naturalization certificates.
Please note that costs associated with verification of numerous documents through apostilles and official translations may be substantial. In most cases, it is necessary to visit our office multiple times to submit additionally required documents.

The submitted application will be sent to the Czech Republic for processing. Please expect that the entire process may take up to 6 months.
We will contact you by email once the certificate has been delivered to our office.
If you possess a previous Certificate of Czech Citizenship, please ensure that no more than one year has passed since its issuance; otherwise, a new certificate must be requested.
