The first exhibition organized by the Czech National Museum in Latvia is displayed on the medieval castle of Bauska in the Baltic city of the same name. The exhibition called “Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor” celebrates the king’s 700th birth anniversary and is opened since the start of August.
Visitors of Bauska castle can view 14 stone carvings and architectural sculptures from the collections of the National Museum. Artistic pieces by Petr Parléř, the most influential builder of the times of Charles IV, serve as evidence of how diverse the architecture of the 2nd half of the 14th century was. Visitors of the exhibition can also see two historical coins from the time of Charles IV’s rule, one of them is called the “King’s ducat” and the second one is called the “Emperor’s ducat”.
The exhibition is based on a rich history of bilateral contacts between Prague and Riga especially under the rule of Charles IV when not only trade caravans and but also spiritual dignitaries travelled between these two cities. Many of the Czech priests held important ecclesiastical authorities in Latvia.
The Czech minister of culture Daniel Herman visited the exhibition on the castle Bauska as well while he was visiting Latvia in September.
