Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam ('The Golem: How He Came into the World', Germany, 1920, directors: Carl Boese / Paul Wegener, 85 min, with English intertitles). The film takes place in the 16th-century Prague and is based on an old legend. In order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution rabbi Löw creates the Golem, a clay statue which he brings to life. When the Golem saves the life of emperor Rudolf II, it seems that the Jews of Prague are safe for now. But suddenly the Golem runs amok… This film is considered to be one of the masterpieces of German expressionism and it owes its success also to the set designs by the famous architect Hans Poelzig.
The Czech sound artists Martin Janíček and Tomáš Procházka are specialized in exploring the acoustic qualities of various materials. During their performances they often use musical instruments they have invented and made themselves.
