UPCOMING EVENT: Czech Masters of Animation at the Danish Film School

On the occasion of 100th anniversary of the birth of the Czech genius of movie animation – Karel Zeman, the Danish Film School in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic, Danish Design School and the National Film Archive in Prague invite you to a one-day film event with works by Czech Masters of Animation.

On Tuesday 2 November 2010 at the Danish Film School in Copenhagen, Danish and Czech film experts will present a selection of works by renowned Czech animators including Karel Zeman, Zdeněk Miler, Jiří Trnka, Břetislav Pojar, Jan Švankmajer, Aurel Klimt and Jiří Barta. The main guest, the Czech animator Jiří Barta, will present his new film In the Attic: Who Has a Birthday Today? (2009) as well as his previous films.

About Karel Zeman

The program is divided into thematic blocks. In the first block (at 13.00) the Danish film historian Ulrich Breunning presents the best known Czech animators. The block starts with Zdeněk Miler and the very first episode of the stories of the Mole: How the Mole Got His Pants(1957) and the very last film by the well-known and multi-talented artist Jiří Trnka, The Hand (1965). Then the block continues with selected passages from the popular animated series by Břetislav Pojar The Dog´s Fiddles (1971), Jan Švankmajer´s famous work Dimensions of Dialogue (1982) and The Fall (1999) an interesting work by the animator of the young generation Aurel Klimt. In the second part Karel Zeman's fantastic film The Fabulous Baron Münchhausen (1961) will be shown. The film awarded many film prizes was inspired by the book by Gottfried Bürger and its illustrations. Based on stories told by Karl Friedrich von Münchhausen, a retired army captain, who was noted for his exaggerated and fantastic accounts of his war adventures and hunting experiences. Karel Zeman enriched the film by a figure of an astronaut Toník, coming from the modern world, as a contrast to a fantastic world of Baron Münchhausen.

In the second block (at 16.30) the main guest – Czech animator Jiří Barta – will show and comment samples from his new film In the Attic:Who Has a Birthday Today? (2009), his previous works and will answer questions.

Czech Ambassador Zdeněk Lyčka will introduce the last block (at 18.30).

Poslední blok (od 18.30) uvede velvyslanec Zdeněk Lyčka. A short documentary The Magic World of Karel Zeman (1962) by Zdeněk Rozkopal will commemorate Karel Zeman´s achievement for world film. Jiří Barta will then prezent his new film In the Attic:Who Has a Birthday Today? (2009). Refreshments and Czech beer will be served at the end of the event.
