The partnership of these towns, which was preceded by long-term technical and economic cooperation between the Kirin Breweries in Takasaki and Pilsner Urquell dates back to 1 August 1990.

Takasaki (高崎 市) is a city located in Gunma Prefecture on the Japanese island of Honshu, with a population of about 371,000. Takasaki is home to several universities and of the local football team Arte Takasaki.
Pilsen is a statutory city in western Bohemia and the metropolis of the Pilsen Region. It lies at the confluence of the rivers Mže, Radbuza, Úhlava and Úslava, from which the river Berounka originates. It has approximately 172 thousand inhabitants and is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic. Pilsen is known as an important industrial, commercial, cultural, and administrative center and a brewing city.
