After relocating to Sweden in 1975, he became a respected figure in Swedish musical life and spent several decades tirelessly promoting Czech music and culture abroad. As a soloist, chamber musician, educator, and organizer of cultural projects, he made a significant contribution to the development of Czech-Swedish cultural relations. In recognition of his long-standing and selfless efforts to promote the Czech Republic and Czech culture abroad, he received the Gratias Agit Award in 2003, which is presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

Jaroslav Šonský was not only an exceptional musician. Through his support, musical recordings, valuable advice, and profound artistic insight, he also played an important role in the creation of the documentary series Czech Roots, about Czechs who left their homeland in search of freedom before 1989. Although he preferred to remain behind the scenes, he was involved in the project from its very beginning and helped shape both its artistic vision and content.

In 2012, he founded the string ensemble Martinů Strings Prague, which is now regarded as one of the leading chamber ensembles in the Czech Republic. The ensemble is named after the composer Bohuslav Martinů, whose legacy Jaroslav Šonský worked tirelessly to promote around the world.

All the musicians with whom he collaborated, both in the Czech Republic and abroad, respected him for his kindness, warmth, and the consideration he showed to every colleague. In the memories of his friends, students, collaborators, and audiences, he will remain an outstanding artist, teacher, and human being who devoted his entire life to fostering and enhancing the reputation of Czech culture throughout the world.
