On April 25, the Embassy hosted the fourth meeting of Czech scientists working in Sweden. Twenty-five participants from seven different institutions attended, most of them from Karolinska Institutet, Uppsala University, and KTH. This year's guest was Aleš Vlk, Ph.D., Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport at Charles University and founder of the www.vedavyzkum.cz portal, who presented the current state and possible directions for the development of Czech higher education and research.
Dagmar Kočandrlová from the organization Czexpats in Science also introduced herself to the participants and described the activities of this initiative supporting Czech scientists abroad.
A new feature of this year's meeting was the opportunity to present one's own research work through posters. Lenka Katila from Uppsala University and Petra Szeszula, who heads the successful biomedical spin-off BrainZell, took advantage of this opportunity. The two scientists established their collaboration thanks to last year's meeting at the embassy. During a joint lunch, participants had the opportunity to share their experiences, view presentations by colleagues (thanks also to Ivana Paulusová from KTH, Magdalena Pavlátová from Charles University, and Blahoslav Rataj from Lund for their posters), and taste Lachout university beer, which was provided for the event by the University of Chemistry and Technology as a sponsorship gift. The meeting was therefore not only a professional but also a social opportunity to establish new contacts.
As part of the program, Aleš Vlk also met with Vice-Rector Maria Ekblom, Professor Örjan Ekblom, and David Lundström from GIH. Together, they discussed opportunities for cooperation in the fields of sports, physical activity, and health. GIH representatives expressed interest in establishing partnerships with Czech universities, which are currently lacking, and would like to change this situation. Vice-Dean Vlk is now negotiating a visit by GIH representatives to the Czech Republic, which could be the first step towards joint projects.
