EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

Starting 12 October 2025, the European Union is progressively launching its new Entry/Exit System (EES) at external border crossing points of the 29 Schengen Member States. This digital system will replace manual passport stamping for short stays and enhance border security, efficiency, and traveller´s convenience.

What is the EES?

The EES is a state-of-the-art border management system that electronically records the entry and exit of non-EU nationals traveling for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). It will collect:

Biometric data (facial image and fingerprints)

Travel document details

Date and place of entry/exit

Refusals of entry, if applicable

Key Dates

12 October 2025: Progressive roll-out begins.

9 April 2026: Full implementation across all external border crossing points.

10 April 2026: Passport stamping will be replaced by electronic records.

Benefits of the EES

Faster and more seamless border crossings

Enhanced security and identity verification

Prevention of visa overstays and identity fraud

Support for law enforcement in detecting serious crimes

Improved compliance for carriers and border infrastructure operators

What Travelers Should Know

During the six-month transition period, passport stamping will continue.

Travelers may experience different procedures depending on the border crossing point.

A mobile app ("Travel to Europe") will be available to pre-register personal data before arrival.

Diplomats and accredited officials are generally exempt from EES registration.

Truck drivers and dual nationals should consult specific guidelines.

Data Protection

The EES complies with the highest EU data protection standards. Travelers will receive a leaflet (digital or paper) explaining their rights and how their data is protected.
