registry of marriages/partnerships

After getting married abroad, as soon as possible, you must notify the Special Registry Office in Brno. This authority will issue your Czech marriage certificate, which is essential when applying for a passport with your new surname.

If you decide to apply for registration of marriage/partnership at our office, you will need to submit the following documents:

  1. printed and completed forms:
  2. valid passport or identity card of both spouses (or its digital copy in the eDoklady application)
  3. full birth certificates of the spouses
  4. British (foreign) marriage certificate with an apostille and translation into Czech by a court-appointed translator.  Please see the list of translators who provided us with their contact information in the list of translators page (court-appointed translators, whose translations do not need further verification, are highlighted)
  5. proof of personal status of the spouses (e.g. marriage certificate, divorce decree, or death certificate)
  6. other relevant documents (e.g. final decision on permission to change the surname, etc.)

Both spouses/partners  must attend the appointment.

Fees apply according to the current schedule of charges. Payments can be made by card or in cash.

useful information

The validity of your passport expires in 3 months from the date of the change of your surname, if it occurred in connection with the citizen's marriage/partnership. A new passport can only be applied for after receiving a Czech marriage certificate.

The translation must always be done by a qualified (certified or court-appointed) translator, self-translations cannot be accepted. If you choose a certified translator, additional certification fee will be charged.

Please note that the original marriage certificate, including the apostille and translation will be kept at the Special Registry Office in Brno. We therefore recommend that you request a duplicate from the British registry office.

If you want to register two surnames listed on your British marriage certificate, to comply with the legal criteria of the Czech Republic, you will need to submit a document bearing your address (e.g. bank statement, electricity bill, etc.) with a translation by a court-appointed translator where the surname appears in the requested form. Please note that if  your surname appears without diacritics in these British documents, it will apperar  identically, ie. without diacritics, in the Czech marriage certificate.

In case of (registered) partnership, if you wish to take the surname of your partner, you must also submit an application.
