On Thursday 10 October 2024, the Embassy hosted screening of the documentary film "The Investigator" and discussion with former International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) investigator Vladimír Dzuro. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Jessie Barton Hronešová, an expert on Balkan issues from the University College London School of Slavonic and East European Studies.
The documentary film of Czech director Viktor Portel "The Investigator", based on the book "The Investigator: the Demons of the Balkan War and Secular Justice", tells the autobiographical story of Vladimír Dzuro, who returns to the Balkans to the sites of his investigations into two major cases - the Ovčara massacre linked to Vukovar Mayor Slavko Dokmanović and the ethnic cleansing perpetrated by warlord Željko Ražnatović - also known as Arkan.
In the discussion that followed, led by Dr Hronešová, the packed room had the opportunity to hear his personal insights and experiences in investigating war crimes and arresting criminals in the former Yugoslavia, the meaning and importance of the ICTY, and his comparison of the Yugoslav wars with the current Russian aggression in Ukraine.
