Deputy Minister Hulicius Attended an Informal Meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council

On Monday, August 11, 2025, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called an informal meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC). The main items on the agenda were support for Ukraine in the context of the Alaska talks and the situation in the Middle East. Czechia was represented at the meeting of foreign ministers by Deputy Minister Eduard Hulicius.

Representatives of the 27 member states agreed that whatever the outcome of the talks between the US and Russian presidents, no decisions on Ukraine should be made without Ukraine. Czechia supports the American proposal for an unconditional ceasefire, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accepted already on March 11 this year. Deputy Minister Hulicius reiterated the Czech position, which clearly states that borders must not be changed by force, that decisions on EU and NATO membership belong to the member states of these organizations and not to Russia, and that Ukrainians and Europeans must be present at negotiations on European security.

In the section devoted to the situation in the Middle East, politicians debated the decision of the Israeli Security Council to directly occupy Gaza City militarily. Deputy Minister Hulicius recalled that it was Hamas terrorists who were responsible for the current situation with their brutal attack on Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023. At the same time, he described Israel's decision to take control of Gaza as a risky move. The ministers agreed on the need to get significantly more humanitarian aid and basic necessities to Palestinian civilians in the Strip. Czechia again called for the release of all remaining Israeli hostages and an immediate ceasefire.

The last item on the agenda was a discussion on the situation of five Greek Cypriots detained by the authorities of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north of the island.
