
International Roma Day Celebration at the Embassy

On Friday 10 May, Ambassador Marie Chatardová, together with Slovak Ambassador Róbert Ondrejcsák and Compass Charity, hosted the second year of International Roma Day celebration at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London.
The two ambassadors and Compass director Petr Torák welcomed guests and opened the event with the Roma anthem Gelem Gelem, performed by musician Michal Bendig, who provided the musical backdrop for the afternoon.
This was followed by a performance by the Romani Culural and Arts Company, a Romani girls' dance group from Newport, who’s 18 members performed impressive synchronised group dances, which were particularly outstanding in the outdoor space, the use of which was allowed by moving the celebreation from the usual 8th April to May.
Visitors to the event were also able to view the art of Roma artists and inspiring stories of successful Roma on display at the Embassy, as well as the documentary film "More Miko", which tells the inspiring story of Roma truck driver and co-founder of the "Czechs help" humanitarian initiative, Jaroslav Miko. The main protagonist of the film personally welcomed the audience and answered their questions after the screening.
