The town of Ipswich recently named one of its new streets after the Czech poet Ivan Blatný. The new street “Ivan Blatný Close” is located in the area of the former psychiatric hospital, where Blatný was treated for many years and where he, under dramatic circumstances, wrote one of his collections “Stará bydliště – Old Risedences”.
Ipswich councilor Martin Cook came up with the idea of honouring the Czech author: „I felt strongly that we should recognise not just the obvious - those that built and operated the hospital but also the no less incredible, sometimes hidden talents, of those like Blatný who were patients there“ said councillor Cook.
At noon on 10th September 2020, Ambassador Libor Sečka, together with Deputy-Mayor Jane Riley and Cllr. Martin Cook took part in the ceremonial inauguration of the street.
The Ambassador then visited the Crematorium in the town of Weeley where I. Baltný was cremated, and the Care House "Edensor" in Clacton-on-Sea, where the poet lived through his last years of life.
The Czech TV informed about the unveiling of the street "Ivan Blatný Close" in its main evening News Programme - the link to the story (in Czech) is HERE.
