Screening of the film “Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good“ in the Danish Film Institute (Cinemateket) at the occasion of Sir Nicholas Winton's 100th birthday

“Nicholas Winton: The Power of Good” – a gripping documentary about a young English stockbroker, who saved the lives of 669 children, most of them Jewish, from Nazi concentration camps – will be shown at the Danish Film Institute (Cinemateket) on 11 June 2009 at 19.15.

In the period between 13 March and 2 August, 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, a 29-year-old stock exchange clerk Nicholas Winton managed to organize 6 transports of altogether 669 children taking them from Prague to their new homes in Great Britain. For nearly 50 years he kept the story about his courageous mission secret. It was not until 1988 that his Danish wife discovered an old scrap book with lists of names and photographs of the children at the attic.
The Power of Good by the Slovak director Matej Mináč, also the author of the film All My Loved Ones (1999), tells via archive recordings, photographs and testimonies by some of the so‑called „Winton“ children and by Nicholas Winton himself the story of an individual whose courage and determination helped to save many human lives. Nicholas Winton, who turned 100 years on 19 May 2009, received a knighthood and was awarded the Order of the British Empire and the Order of T.G.Masaryk for his deeds.
The film was awarded an Emmy for the Best Documentary in 2002. The director Matej Mináč will be present and together with the Israeli Ambassador Mr. Arthur Avnon, the British Ambassador Nicholas Archer and the Czech Ambassador Zdeněk Lyčka will participate in a discussion. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Copenhagen will offer a glass of Czech beer after the discussion.
