Information on Voting by Mail

(This article expired 31.01.2025.)

Thanks to the amendment to the Election Administration Act (Act No. 268/2024 Coll.), Czech citizens living abroad will have the opportunity to apply for Voting By Mail for elections held abroad (i.e. parliamentary elections and presidential elections) from 2025.

The amendment to the law responds to the long-term interest of compatriots in expanding the possibilities of participating in the electoral process and to the reality of the long distances that voters had to travel on their way to polling stations at representative offices.

In the case of voting by mail, the voter (1) proves (as in all elections) Czech citizenship and their identity, (2) must be registered for elections abroad (entered on a special list of voters at the territorially competent representative office of the Czech Republic abroad no later than 40 calendar days before the elections) and (3) actively requests the possibility of voting by mail.

• Czech citizenship and identity are most often proven abroad by a Czech passport or identity card. Therefore, we recommend that potential voters check the validity of their documents and request new ones if necessary.

• 2) Registration on the special voter list is based on an application submitted by a citizen and is permanent in nature, i.e. registration does not need to be repeated before each election and can be requested regardless of the announcement of the election, for example immediately.

• 3) Applications for postal voting can be submitted after the announcement of the election, when more details will also be published. After receiving the application from voters registered on our office's special voter list, our office will send the electoral documentation to the applicants no later than 25 days before the election. The voter will then send their shipment (voting envelope and identification card) so that it arrives at the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago no later than the second day of the election. We assume that we will use the USPS Flat rate envelope service.
