Commemorative Ceremony of 1968 in the Swedish Parliament

The Swedish Riksdag commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Prague Spring and the invasion of Czechoslovakia on April 10, 2018.

The memorial event was organized by the Swedish-Czech and Swedish-Slovak network of parliamentary representatives of Riksdag in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Stockholm and the Czech Center in Stockholm. The main speakers of the event were Urban Ahlin, Chairman of the Riksdag, Milan Štěch, Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, and Peter Osuský, Member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic. The memorial event was accompanied by a Czechoslovak chamber duet performed by Pavel Burdych (violin) and Zuzana Berešová (piano).

„In the early morning of August 21, 1968, armies of the Warsaw Pacts led by the Soviet Army, crossed the borders of Czechoslovakia. More than 70 000 citizens fled the country immedi­ately and were later joined by another 230 000. Thousands of them formed the core of the Czech and Slovak communities in Sweden.“
