Commemoration of Václav Havel´s legacy and 40th anniversary of Charter 77

On Wednesday 18th January 2017, the Czech Embassy in Stockholm jointly with the Swedish Parliament and the Czech Centre in Stockholm organized a tribute event to Václav Havel and Charter 77 in Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) to commemorate 40th anniversary of the Charter´s release.

A seminar titled ´Living in Truth and Freedom – Do We Still Want That?´ was inaugurated by the Speaker of Riksdag Urban Ahlin who shared his own memories of Václav Havel. The second speaker, Michael Žantovský, director of Václav Havel´s Library in Prague, focused on Václav Havel as a public personage and his fight for democracy. The following speech, given by František Janouch, chairman of Charter 77 Foundation, presented the history of Charter 77 and it´s release and the role of Sweden in supporting the Charter as well as in establishing the Foundation. Jiří Šitler, the Czech Ambassador in Sweden, touched upon the role of human rights in international politics and diplomacy. Sabe Soe´s discourse concentrated on fighting for democracy in Burma. The last presenter, Annika Ben David, Special Envoy for human rights of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the issue of human rights in international politics from the Swedish perspective. A lively and enagaging debate about the influence of Václav Havel on contemporary society, about current values and the state of demcracy in Europe and in the global context followed the lecture. The debate was moderated by the chariman of Czech-Swedish Parliamentary network in Riksdag, Finn Bengtsson. and by Peter Jeppsson, Riksdag´s member and also a member of the Network.

The lecture was opened and concluded by a live performance of a well-known Swedish punk band Charta 77 which was founded in 1983 in Swedish town of Köping.
