Josef Lada (1887 – 1957) was a Czech self-taught painter, illustrator, and writer. Though he is best known for his illustrations for the book ‘The Good Soldier Švejk’ by Jaroslav Hašek, he also wrote and illustrated a number of his own children´s books. His artistic expression is characterized by simple lines and harmonious colour combinations, which create an idyllic impression. His paintings mainly depict life in the Czech countryside and often show folk traditions and holidays. Lada’s work has also become an integral part of the Czech winter and Christmas atmosphere.
