On Saturday, 10 May, the first Diplomatic Six-a-Side Football Tournament took place at the Pražačka sports complex in Prague. The tournament was held under the patronage of Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, aiming to bring together diplomacy and sport in a friendly, informal atmosphere.
The tournament featured teams made up of embassy staff and family members from Japan, Kazakhstan, Austria, the United States, China, France, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia — as well as a team composed of representatives from Prague 3.
In a thrilling and closely contested final, the Japanese team defeated Kazakhstan 2–0 in extra time to claim the inaugural trophy. The bronze medals went to a team made up of players from the embassies of Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
The event was officially opened by Deputy Foreign Minister Jan Marian, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the tournament’s symbolic value: “Today is about more than goals. It’s about friendship, good moments, and stepping out of meeting rooms to build ties in a different way. We hope this is the beginning of a lasting tradition that brings diplomacy and sport together every spring.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs looks forward to continuing the Diplomatic Football Cup in the coming years — strengthening informal dialogue and camaraderie across the international diplomatic community in Czechia.
