A joint Czech-Slovak exhibition to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution

On November 13, 2019, on the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, a joint event of the Embassy of the Czech and Slovak Republics in Riga took place in the premises of the European Union House in Riga.
 

The exhibition was opened by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Jana Hynková and Ambassador of the Slovak Republic Ladislav Babčan along with the Deputy of General Director for Central Collection-building and Exhibition Activity of the National Museum in Prague doc. PhDr Michal Stehlík. Ambassador Jana Hynková recalled the events of November 1989 being a direct participant of the student movement. She said that although it is a history, this history is made up of the lives of the participants of that time; it is made up of our lives.

The Velvet Revolution 1989 exhibition was prepared and logistically provided by the National Museum, the text of the exhibition was composed by Michal Stehlík, Marek Junek, Eduard Belušák, the illustrations were provided by Tomski and Polanski.  Translation of the exhibition texts into Latvian was made by the translator of the Embassy in Riga Naděžda Kopoloveca.

The representatives of diplomatic corps and cultural and social life in Riga, the members of the Czech-Latvian Society and students attended the opening ceremony.

On the same day, before the opening of the exhibition the lectures by historians Michal Stehlík from the National Museum and Martiņš Mintaurs from the Department of History of the University of Latvia took place. The lectures deiscovered the events preceding the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and the coming of democratic process in both countries, former Czechoslovakia and Latvia. Then the discussion with the students of the Faculty of History and Philosophy and from the Center of Slavonic Studies of the University of Latvia followed.

The extended version of the Velvet Revolution 1989 exhibition was inaugurated on November 14 with the participation of Ambassador Jana Hynková and the Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Slovak Republic as well as Czech and Slovak soldiers at the military base in Adaži.
