
Opening of the Exhibition "Joan Brehms (1907 - 1995): Scenographer, Architect and Painter" in Riga

On Thursday, November 9, 2017, the opening of the exhibition Joan Brehms (1907 - 1995): Scenographer, Architect and Painter took place at the Museum of Latvian Theater in Riga.
The exhibition was prepared by the National Museum of the Czech Republic in cooperation with the Museum of Latvian Theater, the Latvian Academy of Culture, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Riga and the family of the stage designer. The exhibition is held on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of Joan Brehms's birth. The exhibition moved from Liepāja to Riga.
The exhibition was opened and moderated by the Director of the Museum of Latvian Theater in Riga Mr. Jānis Siliņš. Then, there followed the speeches by Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Riga Miroslav Kosek, exhibition curator Lenka Šaldová and vice-rector of the Latvian Academy of Culture Zane Šiliņa.
One of the last of Brehms's letters, his memory of his native Latvia, was presented by the prominent Latvian actor Gunars Placēns. The opening was finished by the Dvořák's Humoresque.
The Riga exhibition will last till January 7, 2018.
The Czech Embassy in Riga can now state that the opening of this exhibition has succeeded in the fulfilling the long-term dream of the relatives and friends of J. Brehms as well as of the Czech art professionals and cultural institutions to bring back the memory of famous Czech stage designer to his hometown Liepaja and Riga which he has been often remembering till the end of his life.
So, many thanks to all individuals and institutions involved in this large and successful project, especially to the National Museum of the Czech Republic, Mr. Janis Silinš, Director of Eduards Smilgis Theatre Museum, and Joan Brehms' family members and friends: Mrs. Dana Vitásková and Mrs. Baiba Māzere. Moreover, the contribution of Vojtěch Poláček, Lenka Šaldová, Anna Langerová and Adéla Skoupa is also highly appreciated, because the exhibition wouldn‘t be realized without their devotion and involvement.
