Ambassador visited the Bauska region

On 30 April, Ambassador Martin Vítek, together with First Secretary Veronika Sidó and representatives of the Czech NATO eFP unit in Ādaži, led by Deputy Defence Officer for Lithuania and Latvia Anna Derka, visited the region and the city of Bauska, which is a partner city of Náchod.

The visit started at Bauska State Gymnasium, where Ambassador Vítek spoke about important anniversaries for both the Czech Republic and Latvia this year — the 25th anniversary of the Czech Republic's and the 20th anniversary of the Republic's of Latvia accession to NATO and the 20th anniversary of Czechia's and Latvia's accession to the EU. The Ambassador's speech was followed by a presentation of members of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic in Latvia. The aim of this event was to shed light on the work and tasks that Czech military medics perform within the mission in Latvia.

Another important point of the visit was the meeting of the ambassador with the mayor of the city and the chairman of the local government of Bauska region, Mr. Aivars Okmanis. During this meeting, the topics of cooperation between the twin cities of Náchod and Bauska, the main business directions in the region and the key challenges they face were discussed. Also the fact that the European high-speed rail line Rail Baltica will run near the city was mentioned. Both cities aim to strengthen their cooperation and develop economic relations in the fields of culture, tourism and trade. During the meeting with the Mayor, representatives of the Czech Army confirmed the objectives of the mission, stating that its main task is to demonstrate its determination to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of NATO members by its active presence.

At the end, the Ambassador visited Bauska Medieval Castle, which was renovated with the help of Czech experts. Restorers Miloš Gavenda, Miloslav Hanzl and Václav Girsa participated in the restoration of this historical monument and their work is an admirable example of Czech-Latvian cooperation in the field of protecting historical heritage. Members of the delegation had the opportunity to see the reconstructed central tower of the medieval castle and walk around the premises of the Bauska Castle. The tour was personally led by the director of Bauska Castle Museum, Māris Skanis.
