Brussels 29 June 2009 - The Czech Republic held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 January to 30 June 2009 under the motto "Europe without barriers". The Czech Presidency set as its priorities the economy, energy security and external relations with the emphasis on transatlantic relations, Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans. Individual government departments worked on preparing and negotiating the agenda. At the Office of the Government, at 2 400 working meetings and 38 ministerial councils in Brussels and Luxembourg efforts were focused in particular on securing the outcomes of the spring and June European Councils. There were also fourteen informal councils held in the Czech Republic.
