New Norwegian banknote series

(This article expired 01.06.2018 / 02:00.)

On May 30, 2017, new 100-krone and 200-krone banknotes were put into circulation by Norges Bank. By 2020, all banknotes in circulation in Norway will have been exchanged for the new series.

Norway is at the forefront of cashless economies in the world (payment cards, mobile apps, bank transfers), and the role of paper money and coins diminishes fast. However, Norges Bank decided to issue a new series of banknotes in line with the latest technological trends. The new series incorporates advanced security features and will continue to minimize banknote counterfeiting in Norway.

An English guide to the new series of Norwegian banknotes has been published by Norges Bank. It also features information on what to do with the old banknotes. The rule of thumb is that both old and new banknotes can be used simultaneously for a period of one year from the date of issuance of the new series.
