During the Board´s meeting, the Governors addressed many important subjects related to nuclear and radiation safety, nuclear security, and the Agency's activities related to nuclear science and technology. The meeting also dealt with serious safeguards related challenges, such as the verification and monitoring in the Islamic Republic of Iran, implementation of the safeguards agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic and the application of safeguards in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The Governors focused on nuclear safety, security and safeguards in Ukraine, in particular as regards the illegally seized Ukrainian Zaporizhzhyia Nuclear Power Plant. Governors expressed their appreciation for the IAEA and its Director General for closely monitoring and reporting on the situation. They also reaffirmed their support to the Director General’s five principles to help ensure nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhzhyia NPP and for the Agency's missions in Ukraine.

In his opening statement, the IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi elaborated on the close cooperation between the IAEA experts and the Government of Japan regarding the discharge into the sea of the ALPS-treated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in order to ensure that everyone is properly informed and assure that the relevant international safety standards continue to be applied.

The Director General also addressed the serious cash liquidity challenge the Agency is currently facing due to a delay in receipt of contributions from Member States to the Agency's regular budget.

As the Czech Chairmanship of the Board will be coming to its end soon, with the last meeting scheduled for 2 October 2023, Ambassador Šrámek once again reiterated his gratitude to the IAEA Member States and the Secretariat for their kind cooperation and support.
