At its meeting on 8 December 2023, the Vienna-based UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) elected Ambassador Ivo Šrámek as the Chairperson of the Commission for the year 2024.
He succeeds Ambassador Mary Wangui Mugwanja of Kenya. The CCPCJ Chairmanship once again proves that Czechia is a staunch supporter of effective multilateralism and rules-based international order with the UN at its core.
The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is the principal policymaking body of the United Nations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. It develops global policy and proposes international action against crime and towards more efficient and fairer criminal justice systems worldwide. Through its resolutions and decisions the CCPCJ contributes to international standard-setting and policy-making in crime prevention. The CCPCJ also promotes international cooperation and sharing of good practices to address new and emerging forms of crime.
The CCPCJ was established in 1992 as functional Commission of the ECOSOC. Through its holistic approach to crime prevention, including support to people-centred and human rights-based responses to crime, the CCPCJ contributes to efforts to achieve targets under several of the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 16.
