Czechia at the 12th Ministerial Conference of the WTO in Geneva

Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela, who led the Czech delegation at MC12 highlighted in his speech at the plenary session the importance of multilateral trade rules from the perspective of a medium-sized and highly open economy.

He confirmed the readiness of Czechia to contribute in addressing the current challenges facing the WTO also from the position of the upcoming EU Presidency. Global challenges were also discussed separately at the special plenary session. On this occasion, the Czech Republic emphasized, inter-alia, the negative impact of Russian aggression in Ukraine on global trade.

Czechia took part in MC12 negotiations through the EU. Despite the initially unfavorable prospects, WTO members reached agreement on a substantive package of outcomes on the morning of 17 June. Probably the most comprehensive one since the organization was founded. Amongst them, the launch of the long-awaited WTO reform process, one of the priority issues of Czechia and the EU.

MC12 was held from 12 to 17 June 2022 at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, and was co-hosted by Kazakhstan.
