The appointment of the Director General was preceded by an election process, which began with a call for nominations sent in July 2025 to all WIPO members. By the set deadline, that is by 4^th October 2025, Singapore and Haiti had submitted their nominations. The current Director General, Daren Tang, originally from Singapore, was thus challenged by the Haitian candidate, Johanny Stanley Joseph. Both candidates subsequently underwent interviews with the members at an informal meeting of the Coordination Committee on 27^th January 2026. At an Extraordinary Session of the Coordination Committee on 12^th February 2026, the election of the candidate for nomination to the position of Director General took place. The result of the election was decisive, with Daren Tang receiving the votes of 81 members of the Coordination Committee out of a total of 83. Based on the nomination, the members at the WIPO General Assembly then appointed the current Director General to a second term.
