The General Council of the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its Special Meeting on 29 November 2024 approved the candidacy of the current Director-General and sole candidate, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (originally from Nigeria, also a US citizen), for the post of head of the organization. Dr. Ngozi pledged in her election speech to make every effort to preserve and strengthen this vital organization which is currently facing a difficult global situation. In the medium term, she sees the main tasks as reforming the agricultural sector, as well as restoring the dispute settlement system to full functionality. In the longer term, she wants to stimulate debate on key issues such as level playing field, industrial policy or investment and development. In the future, she also wants to focus on trade in services, digital trade and trade and the environment, since, in her own words, the future of trade is digital, green and service-based.
