On Thursday, 18 July, Prime Minister Petr Fiala attended the 4th meeting of European leaders known as the European Political Community, hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Blenheim Palace near Oxford.
The European Political Community, a meeting attended by European heads of state and government, first met in the autumn of 2022 during the Czech presidency of the Council of the European Union at Prague Castle.
The leaders discussed the current challenges facing Europe, from Russia's military threat and support for a restored Ukraine, to energy and illegal migration. The event was also the first opportunity for the new British Prime Minister Starmer, who took office only two weeks ago, to meet with a number of his counterparts, including Peter Fiala.
On the sidelines of the event, Prime Minister Fiala also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom he signed a historic bilateral agreement on security and cooperation between the two countries. He also spoke briefly with King Charles III, who recalled how he had received commemorative medals from him as Rector of Masaryk University in Brno during his last visit to Czechia.
