Reception on the Occasion of the Armed Forces Day of the Czech Republic in London

A ceremonial reception marking the Armed Forces Day of the Czech Republic, observed annually on 30 June, took place in London on Tuesday, 16 June.

This date commemorates the oath taken by Czechoslovak legionnaires in Darney, France, on 30 June 1918—a significant milestone on the path to the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia and a symbol of the military traditions upheld today by the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic.

The reception brought together a wide range of guests, including diplomats, defence attachés from around the world, descendants of war veterans, members of veterans’ associations, representatives of both British and Czech armed forces serving in the United Kingdom, and other distinguished guests.

The evening was formally opened with the national anthems of the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom. Speeches followed by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United Kingdom, Václav Bartuška, and the Defence Attaché, Brigadier General Miroslav Heger. Their remarks highlighted the Czech Republic’s role as an active and reliable ally, as well as the importance of international cooperation in today’s security environment.

“The Armed Forces of the Czech Republic are a dependable and active ally, contributing to NATO, European Union and United Nations operations, and working closely with partners around the world,” said Brigadier General Heger during his address.

The cultural programme featured an impressive drumming performance by the Reed’s School CCF – Corps of Drums, which was warmly received by the audience.

The reception reaffirmed the strong ties between the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom, as well as with other allies, and underscored the importance of joint efforts in ensuring security and stability in today’s world.
