In the footsteps of Edvard Beneš and Jan Masaryk in the UK

On 9 November 2017, a delegation from the Czech Embassy, Deputy Ambassador Jan Brunner and Press Secretary Jana Čechlovská, visited the places in Buckinghamshire associated with the stay of President Edvard Beneš and the Foreign Minister of Czechoslovakia, Jan Masaryk.

The delegation was guided by a knowledgeable local amateur historian Neil Rees, who has long had an interest in the work of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile in the United Kingdom during the period 1940-1945. He has also published on the subject.

Mr. Rees pointed out to the delegation the county house in Aston Abbott where President Beneš and his family lived. The property is now privately owned and could not be accessed. They then went on to have a look at the bus stop between Wingrave and Aston Abbotts which President Beneš donated to the towns as written on a commemorative plaque there. The last stop was the Manor House in Wingrave, which during WW2 hosted staff of the Czechoslovak Chancellery and where Jan Masaryk had a weekend flat. With the kind permission of the current owners the delegation visited a room with a beautiful fireplace where the chancellery staff met in the evenings and where Jan Masaryk used to be a guest too.

The Czechoslovak presence in the area is marked with a lime tree in the middle of Aston Abbotts and a flowerbed of Lidice Roses planted in the grounds of the local church. According to the memories of the local people, the presence of the Czechoslovak government representatives in Buckinghamshire was perceived very positively, many friendships were created that lasted even after the war and which are still remembered.

As part of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Embassy, together with representatives of Wingrave and Aston Abbotts, plan to organise a friendly get together in 2018 to commemorate the presence of President Beneš, Jan Masaryk and other Czechoslovaks in the area.
