Embassy of the Czech Republic in London Honours the Memory of War and Modern Veterans

On the occasion of Veterans Day, a traditional reception was held at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London on 10 November 2025 to honour the memory of all those who served their country in the armed forces.

The event, dedicated to commemorating war veterans and all who have contributed to the defence and protection of our nation both at home and abroad, brought together members of the diplomatic corps, modern war veterans of the Czech Republic, representatives of the British armed forces, veterans’ associations, and members of the Czech community.

During the ceremony, Brigadier General Miroslav Heger, Defence Attaché of the Czech Republic, and Ambassador Václav Bartuška delivered speeches highlighting the significance of Veterans Day as an occasion to honour the courage, determination, and sacrifice of all men and women who served the ideals of freedom and peace. They also recalled the deep tradition of remembrance in the United Kingdom, symbolised by the red poppy, and the important role played by Czechoslovak soldiers and airmen fighting alongside their British allies during the Second World War.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain – a period during which Czech men and women, serving in the Royal Air Force alongside the British and other allies, fought bravely.

In his remarks, General Heger also paid tribute to modern veterans of the Czech Armed Forces who have served in international missions in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, Mali, and other countries. He emphasized that their professionalism and sense of duty continue the legacy of the wartime generation.

Both Czech representatives also expressed their gratitude to those who preserve the memory of Czechoslovak soldiers and veterans in the United Kingdom – veterans’ associations, historians, museums, communities, and individuals whose work keeps history alive and gives remembrance its true meaning.

“We will remember them.” – We shall never forget.
