The 10th Anniversary of the Aceh Earthquake and Tsunami

Indonesia marked the tenth anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit the northwest of the country. Central and provincial governments’ representatives reiterated their appreciation of the international assistance following the disaster, mentioning also the share of the Czech Republic.
The ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Aceh earthquake and tsunami was held on 26 December 2014 in Banda Aceh. Vice President Jusuf Kalla, in his speech delivered during the event, highly appreciated the contribution of the world community to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Aceh after the catastrophe. Members of foreign diplomatic missions including a representative of the Czech Embassy were presented certificates of appreciation by the Governor of Aceh, Mr. Zaini Abdullah, expressing gratitude for the support and help of their respective governments and nations.
In response to the 2004 disaster, the Czech Republic provided (PDF, 76 KB) 6,5 million euros for post-tsunami relief efforts, reconstruction assistance and support for the peace process in Aceh. The aid included 13 drinking water treatment plants, pharmaceuticals and vaccinations and school supplies.
