(This article expired 15.05.2013 / 02:00.)

The opening of the 13th edition of the European Film Festival „Europe on Screen“ takes place this year on 3rd May 2013 in Jakarta and symbolically marks the Europe Day, celebrated on 9th May. During 10 festival days about 72 movies from 30 European countries will be screened in different venues in Jakarta and Bandung, Denpasar, Makassar, Medan, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. The Festival will run until 12th May 2013.

The Festival will present a mosaic of European films by emerging film talents as well as established masters of European cinema in the following sections: Xtra, Discovery, Docu, Children, and Retro/Focus. For the first time ever, a new “Children” section will be introduced at the Festival this year. Accompanying the film programme is the 3rd EOS Short Film Competition, retrospectives devoted to two famous European filmmakers, a workshop on sound editing and mixing, seminars and film discussions.

The Czech Republic will be represented by a documentary movie Nicky's Family, produced by director Matej Minac in 2011. It tells the nearly forgotten story of Nicholas Winton, an Englishman who organized the rescue of 669 predominantly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia just before the outbreak of World War II. Winton, now 103 years old, did not speak about these events with anyone, even with his wife for more than half a century. His exploits would have probably been forgotten if his wife, fifty years later, had not found a suitcase in the attic, full of documents and transport plans.

Today, the story of this rescue is known all over the world. He was knighted by the Queen Elisabeth II and the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing his remarkable deed.

The Czech movie “Nicky's Family” can be seen at:

·        Jakarta: – May 4th at 14:30 in Erasmus Huis

·        Jakarta: May 11th at 12:00 Istituto Italiano

·        Surabaya: May 11th .at 16:00 IFI Surabaya

The movie won the Audience Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2011 and Best documentary at the Montreal World Film Festival 2011. It was nominated for the Czech Lion Prize for the best documentary movie in 2012.
