Speakers at the round table on the changing security and energy situation included Jari Vilén, Ambassador of the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Barents Region and the EU Northern Dimension, Veli Pekka Tynkkynen, Professor at the University of Helsinki and the National Defence University focusing on Russian energy and environmental policy, and Juha Jokela, Director of the EU Research Programme at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. In addition to representatives of the Czech Embassy, the event was attended by the Ambassadors of Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Romania and Swedish and Polish diplomats.

One of the main topics of the discussion was the assessment of the current security situation in Finland and Europe and the process of Finland's orientation towards NATO. NATO's return to territorial defence opens up opportunities to strengthen the EU's security dimension in crisis management and defence industry cooperation. Finland has high hopes for the implementation of the recently approved EU Strategic Compass. The country has to cope with a historically quite significant energy dependence on the Russian Federation, which is now not so large in total volume but cuts across almost all sectors and affects mainly industries. The relative advantage is the low share of natural gas in the Finnish energy mix and  only a minimal number of households as end-users.
