The topic of the discussion was Bjarnason’s report and current trends of Finnish territorial, regional and multilateral defence and security policy, including relationship with NATO and engagement within EU Common Security and Defence Policy.

Finnish approach to security and defence questions has changed due to the annexation of Crimea, as well as the overall change of security environment and emerging threats. Finland has been more actively profiling on multilateral platforms, namely in co-operation with NATO and within EU. In practice, bilateral co-operation, especially with Nordic neighbours and US, is not losing its relevance and the accent on territorial defence is increasing.

The basis of Finnish strategic defence approach remains unchanged and is still based on conservatism, non-intervention, regional co-operation (primarily with Sweden and Norway) and orientation to relations with great powers and NATO. The dialogue with great powers will most likely continue in the future due to activities of President Niinistö.
