Working breakfast focused on the Somali Minority in Finland

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki hosted a working breakfast dedicated to addressing the rights of people of Somali origin in Finland.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Finland-Somalia Association, the Finnish Somali League, the Finnish Somalia Network, and AFAES. In addition, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland participated in the discussions.

The focus of the breakfast meeting was on identifying the key challenges facing the Somali community in Finland. Among the topics discussed were employment opportunities, integration strategies, and creating pathways for the younger generation to thrive within Finnish society. The conversation highlighted the importance of inclusive policies that promote equal participation for minorities in Finland's social, economic and political life. Creating better opportunities for the younger generation, through education and mentorship, is essential to ensuring they become active members of  Finnish society.

The breakfast also served as a platform to highlight the historical significance of this day. Czech embassies worldwide commemorate President Mitterrand’s legendary breakfast with Czech dissidents, led by Václav Havel on December 9, 1988. This meeting marked one of the crucial turning points in the struggle for human rights in former Czechoslovakia, providing inspiration for the ongoing global fight for democracy and justice.
