On security in the Baltic Sea with the Chairman of the Defence Committee, Jukka Kopra

On 6 February 2025, a Luncheon discussion was held at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki, focusing on the security situation in the Baltic Sea and the current hybrid threats that threaten not only Finland but the whole of Europe. The main guest speaker was Mr. Jukka Kopra, Chairman of the Defence Committee of the Finnish Parliament.

The working lunch hosted by Czech Ambassador Adam Vojtěch was attended by ambassadors and other diplomats from a total of nine Northern European countries. The discussion focused on the current threats arising from the Russian aggression in Ukraine and other Russian activities. Furthermore, the defence policy of Finland and other countries in the current unstable security situation was discussed. Jukka Kopra mentioned a number of security challenges, including cyber-attacks and military provocations in the European geopolitical space. Given the escalation of tensions between Russia and the West, a flexible and well-thought-out defence policy capable of countering conventional and new forms of threats and attacks is essential.

There was also a discussion on how to respond to hybrid threats and how countries can support each other in ensuring security and stability in the region. A number of participating diplomats raised questions about the continued coordination of defence policies and security cooperation within NATO, particularly with regard to the need for a unified approach on certain security issues and the protection of fragile democratic institutions from negative influencing.
