First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Mr Vít Rakušan visited Finland on 19 – 21 February at the invitation of his Finnish counterpart Minister of Interior Mari Rantanen.
Minister Rakušan had a bilateral meeting with Minister Rantanen and discussed issues such as combating the instrumentalization of migration, EU migration policies, tackling hybrid threats and disinformation, protection of critical infrastructure and professional training of security forces. Together, they visited the Vaalimaa Border Crossing Point, where they were hosted by the Southeast Finland Border Guard District and where they could inspect the border fence being built in the most exposed areas of the Finnish-Russian border.
The Czech delegation also visited a civil defense Merihaka Bedrock Shelter, where they were inspired by Finland's specific and very responsible approach to civil protection, backed by the highest coverage of shelters per capita in Europe. Finland puts emphasis not only on top notch protection during possible conflicts and crisis, but also tries to make shelters a common part of daily life of the citizens in peace times through using them for parking, sports and other leisure activities.
The Minister with his delegation also paid a visit to The European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats. The focus of presentations and follow-up discussions was put on disinformation and preventing election interference and protection of critical infrastructure. Several recent cases of disruption of submarine cables in Baltic Sea and other Russian sabotage activities were thoroughly analyzed, taking into account the big picture of current geopolitical crisis in Europe.
