The Ambassador’s Lecture on the Velvet Revolution at the Students’ Club Munkekælderen

On 17 November 2009 – the anniversary of the beginning of the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia – a lecture by Ambassador Zdeněk Lyčka entitled „The Velvet Revolution and Bananas“ took place at Munkekælderen, the students’ club of Copenhagen University.
About 120 students and diplomats participated at the lecture and the following debate which was moderated by Prorector Lykke Friis, Copenhagen University.
The Ambassador made a recollection what happened in the 1980s not only in Czechoslovakia but also in other neighbouring countries of the Soviet block. Later on he focused on his personal experience from the Velvet Revolution. He read short parts from his own notes from 18 November 1989, from Peter Sís’ book THE WALL: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain and from other relevant texts (Several Sentences, Václav Havel’s works etc.). After the lecture, the documentary The Tender Revolution was sceened.
On the occasion of the anniversary of 17 November, the Czech Embassy presented a few pannels of the documentary photo exhibition ”1989 as Seen by Photographers”.
