"The Carriage to Vienna“ in Husets Biograf

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Copenhagen and Husets Biograf cordially invite you to the Czech Film Night, which will take place Tuesday the 2nd of May 2023 at 7:30 p.m. in Husets Biograf, Rådshusstræde 13, Copenhagen K.

For the May screening, we have chosen a wartime psychological drama: "The Carriage to Vienna" (1966) directed by Karel Kachyna and screenplay by Jan Procházka.

The film goes back in time to the end of the Second World War and takes place in the spirit of skepticism of the Czechoslovak new wave, which radically changed the depiction of recent Czechoslovak history. At the same time, it was not a simple reversal of the previous optics (bad German, good partisan), but about relativization, built thanks to the focus on the individual and his individual experience of "big" historical events. The chamber character of the story underlines the tight visual concept of cinematographer Josef Illík. The timeless story, telling about the redistribution of guilt and retribution in a hard time, ended up in the normalization vault for a long time.
