The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Copenhagen cordially invites you to the September film evening, which will take place on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 7:30 p.m. at Husets Biograf, Rådhusstræde 13, Copenhagen K.
Husets Biograf is a wonderful space with an extraordinary genius loci, which, however, is in dire need of renovation. This will take place from autumn 2024 and the cinema will therefore be closed for a longer period. Therefore, unfortunately, our September screening will be the last for a long time to take place in this beautiful, traditional and many-year-old cooperation space.
For the September screening, we have chosen the wonderful comedy Who Wants to Kill Jessie (1966), the feature screenwriting debut of Miloš Macourek and the first of a series of crazy comedies on which he collaborated with director Václav Vorlíček. The narrative resonates with criticism of all those who try to manage, perfect and control a person. The authors develop the funny idea through comic characters who do not speak, but express themselves through "bubbles". The comic book aesthetic permeates the live action in all sorts of imaginative ways. Cinematographer Jan Němeček and artist Karel Saudek have a significant share in the visual appearance of the film. The film was shot in cinemascopic format, but due to the demanding requirements for the implementation of tricks, it had to be in black and white.

The main characters of the film are the Beránek couple, both docents who work on scientific discoveries. Mrs. Beránková deals with somniology - she is looking for a means that would influence people's dreams. Docent Beránek, on the other hand, is trying to invent a device of enormous physical strength. From the moment he gets his hands on the comic books, everything changes. Because of his wife's unproven preparation, three comic book characters from Beránek's dream come to life - beautiful Jessie, superman and a gunman. The big adventure chase begins…
