Rozálie: A Musical One-Woman Show

Date: 22 November 2023 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Venue: Kennedy Center Millennium Stage

Rozálie: A Musical One-Woman Show comes to the Kennedy Center on November 22, 2023, at 6 pm. (Tickets are available online for this free performance beginning Nov. 8) Multi-talented artist Rozálie captivates audiences with her unique blend of music and performance. As well as being a charismatic singer, accordionist, actress and dancer, Rozálie’s songwriting skills were recently recognized with a nomination for the prestigious Czech music award, Ceny Anděl, with her debut album Korzetiér.

The album showcases her exceptional vocal abilities with the supporting accompaniment of the accordion. The songs on the album are a fusion of various cultures, falling somewhere between folk and chanson, characterized by their poetic lyrics and sincerity. Rozálie draws from her own life experiences to create a distinct sound that sets her apart from other artists.

With her talent for anecdotal story-telling, Rozálie introduces and explains her songs with her uniquely raw candor and playful irony, laced with cynical romance. Her charming authenticity and vulnerability continue to attract a wide circle of supporters. The audience becomes part of the story, as they laugh, cry, and reflect. Chanson, meaning “song” in French, emerged in the late 19th Century. It is often associated with the cabaret culture of Paris and is known for its intimate and expressive nature. Chansons typically feature simple melodies, allowing the focus to be on the lyrics and the singer’s interpretation.

The theatre Rozálie calls “home” is Prague’s renowned Theatre La Fabrika, but her compelling show resonates with the most diverse audiences across the world. In a music industry dominated by manufactured and formulaic music, Rozálie’s compositions offer a refreshing change, with their honest portrayal of real-life with all its ups and downs. For this exclusive USA tour her program draw upon French and Latin American classics from, amongst others, Edith Piaf and Chavela Vargas in their original language. The 3-venue tour kicks off in New York at the popular Bohemian National Hall, a cultural institution dedicated to promoting Czech and Slovak arts and culture. This historic venue provides the perfect backdrop for Rozálie’s unique blend of music and performance.
