The Avalon Theatre will screen the award-winning film Zátopek  as part of the Czech Embassy's ongoing Lions of Czech Film Series on September 13, at 8 pm.

ZÁTOPEK
Directed by David Ondříček, 2021, 131 min., Czech with English subtitles,

The film Zátopek stars Václav Neužil as long-distance runner and four-time Olympic gold medalist Emil Zátopek. He achieved an unprecedented hat trick of winning the 5,000m, 10,000m, and marathon at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. With the nickname “Czech locomotive,” he is widely considered one of the greatest runners of all time. The film begins with Australian runner Ron Clarke visiting Zátopek in 1968. During their dialogue, viewers return to the beginning of Emil’s passion for running, his first success at the WCA in Berlin, his meeting with the javelin thrower Dana, his future wife, and witness the increasing pressure of the communist regime.

The film garnered eight Czech Lions for best film, director, actor in a leading role, cinematography, editing, sound, production design, and makeup and hairstyling. It also clutched the fan vote category at the awards. Furthermore, the film was the Czech submission for the 2021 Oscars. The film premiered at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
